I've gotten the sewing bug bad. I went on a shopping spree on the McCall website a couple months ago and got a bunch of patterns, including Butterick #5490. I got the fabric on clearance at Hancock and had some extra fabric lying around for the lining. All in all, I spent around $10 on this dress. w00t! What's not to love about a $10 dress?!
Way less psychedelic than it appears on your screen. |
The pleating on the dress is beautiful; very flattering and adds a lot of movement to the dress.
Cool kids wear their dresses with rifle bullets. |
No idea what's up with my RAGE FIST in this picture. |
Like most patterns, this one runs small. I cut a size 8 in this dress and wish I had made a size 10. I had to fudge the pattern in the boobular area in order to make everything fit. Less busty seamstresses may have an easier time in that area. I also widened the straps since the addition of the lining made them about 1/2 inch wide. Not cool. The pattern of the lining is seriously flawed also. That was very disappointing. It ended up around two inches shorter than the bodice of the dress. I said "screw it" and just tacked it down. Good to go!

I should mention that this pattern is listed on the Butterick website for $16.96. I got it two months ago for around $3. Having made the dress, I would not pay $17 for this pattern. Besides the flawed lining pattern, the directions for construction are just... bad. Check eBay for cheap sewing patterns, just make sure it says the pattern is uncut.
All in all, I would definitely make another version of this dress! Maybe a cute little floral print? Hmmm...
